On 25-26 October 2018 the European Research Council (ERC) holds a conference in Brussels on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in order to provide a forum between Principal Investigators leading ERC-funded projects, and to position ERC as contributor to Artificial Intelligence (AI) research through its bottom-up approach. More specifically, the conference has the following aims:

  1. to explore state of the art research related to AI;
  2. to get a better understanding of likely benefits and potential threats of ever improving AI;
  3. to highlight potential avenues for seizing the opportunities of AI whilst limiting negative effects for humanity

At the Delft Design for Values (DDfV) Institute we believe that a powerful avenue for the latter is designing for values such as accountability and transparency while further developing AI. On the first conference day, 25 October, prof. Jeroen van den Hoven, scientific director of the DDfV Institute will speak about this in the session on ethics. His talk (15:25), as well as those of the other speakers, can be viewed via a live webcast.
